Information we collect and why

When you contact us

Crafty Cat does not currently use a contact form. If you email us, we will receive your email address, your name if you provide it, and anything you choose to include in your message. We use this information to read and respond to your enquiry.

Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: it is reasonable for us to use the details you send so that we can correspond with you and manage enquiries about Crafty Cat.

When you visit the website

Like most websites, the service hosting Crafty Cat may process limited technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device information, the pages requested, and the date and time of your visit. This information may be used to deliver the website, maintain security and diagnose technical problems.

Our lawful basis for this processing is legitimate interests in operating a secure, reliable website. Crafty Cat does not currently use its own visitor accounts, behavioural profiling or automated decision-making.

Links and services provided by other organisations

Crafty Cat links to services operated by other organisations. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit or use them.

YouTube

Some pages include YouTube videos or links. When an embedded video loads or you visit YouTube, Google may receive technical information about your visit and may use cookies or similar technologies. You can read the Google Privacy Policy.

Substack

Links inviting you to join Sarah’s Substack take you to Substack’s website. Any subscription details are entered there and are handled under Substack’s Privacy Policy. Crafty Cat does not currently collect newsletter subscriptions directly through this website.

Affiliate links

Some reviews contain clearly identified affiliate links. If you follow one, the retailer or its affiliate network may use cookies or similar technology to record that the visit came from Crafty Cat. If you later make a qualifying purchase, Crafty Cat may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Affiliate reporting may include aggregated information about clicks, purchases and commission. Crafty Cat does not receive your payment details from the retailer. Please check the retailer’s own privacy and cookie information before purchasing.

Cookies

Crafty Cat uses Google Analytics only when you choose “Accept analytics” in the cookie notice. Google Analytics helps us understand information such as which pages are visited, the approximate duration of visits, broad device and browser information, and how visitors arrived at the website. We use this information to understand which content is useful and to improve the website.

Analytics is switched off by default. If you reject non-essential cookies, the Google Analytics tag is not loaded. If you accept, Google may place analytics cookies including _ga and a property-specific _ga_* cookie. You can change your choice at any time using “Cookie settings” in the footer.

Google acts as a service provider for this analytics data and may process information outside the United Kingdom. You can read the Google Privacy Policy. Embedded content and websites reached through external or affiliate links may also use their own cookies under their own policies.

Who receives information and how long we keep it

We do not sell personal information. Information may be handled by trusted service providers where necessary to host the website or provide email. We may also disclose information if required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect our legal rights.

Email enquiries are normally kept only for as long as needed to deal with the conversation and any reasonable follow-up, and are then deleted when no longer required. Technical hosting records are retained according to the hosting provider’s security and operational retention periods.

Some external providers may process information outside the UK. Where this applies, those providers are responsible for using an appropriate legal safeguard for the transfer.

Your data protection rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have the right to ask for a copy of your personal information, correct it, delete it, restrict how it is used, or object to its use. To make a request, email sarah@smedway.co.uk.

You have the right to object where we rely on legitimate interests to use your personal information.

If you are unhappy with how your information has been handled, please contact us first so that we can try to resolve the issue. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

Changes to this policy

This policy will be reviewed when Crafty Cat introduces a new service or changes the way personal information is used. The date at the top of the page will show when it was last updated.
