Cats use urine and faeces as scent markers, it is a fundamental and normal behaviour of all felines, from the tiger to our moggies it is their most powerful form of communication.
The most unpleaseant form of marking for us is spraying and it is this that causes the most difficulties between felines and humans.
Spraying should not be confused with urinating. Spraying is a deliberate act that is carried out regardless of whether the cat has a full or empty bladder.
The posture that the cat adpots is important also. When urinating the cat will squat, when spraying the cat will stand. This is done on purpose so that the scent is nose height for other cat to smell.
Unneutered males are the most enthusiastic where spraying is concerned as they use this to mark their territory. The scent is left to keep the rest of the feline residents or nearby population exactly up to date of whos patch they are on.
Neutering the cat normally stops this behaviour but cats will also spray if they feel threatened or anxious and need to reaffirm their presence or territory.
The reason for your cat's behaviour maybe due to an underlying medical reason. If you are concerned about your cat, always consult your vet or a cat behaviourist for professional, qualified advice.
