Cats are extremely attentive towards their personnal hygiene.
There is a specific sequence to grooming when full 'ablushions' occur and typically are as follows:
• Lick the lips
• Lick the side of one paw until it's wet
• Rub the wet paw over the head, including ear, eye, cheek and chin
• Wet the other paw in the same way
• Rub the wet paw over that side of the head
• Lick the front legs and shoulders
• Lick flanks
• Lick genitals
• Lick hind legs
• Lick tail from base to tip
Long haired cats are the most difficult to groom as the fur can get quite tangled. The cat after sometime realises that what you want to do can involve some discomfort and strange positions and so quickly learns that claws are a good detterent.
Frequent grooming as early as possible in a cats life can ease this problem so that the cat gets used to what you are doing. If you are way past all that some use a cats muzzle which can make the cat less active and more tolerant to being handled.
The reason for your cat's behaviour maybe due to an underlying medical reason. If you are concerned about your cat, always consult your vet or a cat behaviourist for professional, qualified advice.
