Sometimes your cat may appear to be sneering, with his nose screwed up and lip curled back and mouth slightly open. What makes the cat pull this face is actually the act of Flehmen.

Just behind the upper front teeth is a little tube known as the Jacobsen's organ. This is highly sensitive to airbourne smells and chemicals and is best described as a taste and smell organ. The cat sucks in the smell it is interested in across this organ to interpret the smell. The main use appears to be the analysis of urine.

The organ is named after the Danish doctor who discovered it nearly 200 years ago.

The reason for your cat's behaviour maybe due to an underlying medical reason. If you are concerned about your cat, always consult your vet or a cat behaviourist for professional, qualified advice.
