If a cat feels threatened by another animal, say a dog, it will arch its back, puff its fur up and stand broadside to the challenger to make itself as large and intimidating as possible.
During this display the cat will often hiss like a snake to threaten that he/she is a daunting prospect to take on.
Experienced cats will learn that the best approach is to defend and attack rather than run - if you run you are probably food and the hunting instincts of an animal like a dog will trigger this response. The more courageous the cat the better chance it has of escaping unscathed.
The reason for your cat's behaviour maybe due to an underlying medical reason. If you are concerned about your cat, always consult your vet or a cat behaviourist for professional, qualified advice.
